The Colden Circle
- Reykjavík - Thingvellir - Geysir and Gullfoss

Travelling the golden circle of south Iceland offers some of the best-known natural phenomena of Iceland. Even though it's not officialy part of the circle, we reccomend that you use this tour to go to Nesjavellir, a high-temperature geothermal area located near Lake Þingvallavatn and Europe's oldest parlament.

Of the hot water we need to provide central heating to the houses of Rekjavík, Icelands capital, Nesjavellir supply approximately 25%.

To the north you will enter Þingvellir, a national park and from there to Alþingi, Iceland's ancient parliament.

When driving from Reykjavík through Mosfellssveit and onto Thingvellir you pass Gljufrastein, the x-home of Halldor Laxnes, Nobel Prize winning author in 1955, from there the road rises gradually up to the Mosfellsheidi moors, high point of this road is 280 feets, driving down from the moors you enter the national park of Thingvellir, home of Thingvellir national park and Alþingi, Iceland's ancient parliament.

Thingvellir has been a national park since 1928 and lies at the northern most extremity of the lake. Thingvellir, meaning "Assembly plains", contain many of Icelands most historical places among those Almannagja, Logberg and
the river Öxará. In addition to it's historical interest Thingvellir is of unique geological nature.

From Thingvellir the circle goes on to Laugavatn, a little resort, that has a beautiful situation. Educational center, big farming area and plenty to see for the traveller. Tourist amenities include hotels, big geothermal area that includes a natural steam sauna, good fishing lakes and rivers, horse rental where you can go pony
trekking from the local riding centers.

Leaving Laugavatn behind the road goes between mountain roots and up and down foothills and eventually leads to Geysir, Icelands best known geyser area and includes the infamous geyser of geysers Geysir and his little brother Strokkur. Here travellers can go shopping, check out some museums, dinne at the local restaurants and more.

Leaving Geysir, the drive is mainly through grassland, from the road you can on a sunny day get good views at the glacier Langjökull, Icelands second largest glacier.

Nest stop is Gullfoss, a huge waterfall in a cliff-girted canyon. It plunges over rock ledges in a series of two cascades over 30 meters down into the deep. This impressive, powerfull and perharps Icelands most beautifull waterfall can be viewed from many different vantage tumbles.

When you drive back to Reykjavík you should take your time in passing Fluðir, Selfoss and Hvergerði, we reccomend the Ice-cream in Eden, HVeragerði. In Hveragerði you will also see how Icelanders have harnessed the natural geothermal energy of Iceland to grow vegetables, fruits and exotic plants.

A short drive through some highly mountainous region, over Hellisheiði, will bring us back to the capital.
