After careful preparation the store opened in downtown Hafnarfjordur in November 1992, only the third such to be opened in Iceland. At first Thorarinnand Maria intended to sell non specialist cheeses, but they soon decided to try to deviese a cheese product no one else had. After several tries Thorarinn perfected a recipe that marries soft cream cheese with herbs and spicees formed into rolls
The cheese rolls were an immidiate success and although mainly intended for sale in Ostahusid popular demand led Thorarinn and Maria to sell the rolls to other stores and to strike a national distribution deal with Icelands milk products monopoly. Todays production is about 12.000 rolls per month and can easlily be increased substantially. As the company has grown Thorarinn and Maria have diversified, and now also manufactures a brie cheese filled with garlic or blue cheese that has been a resounding success.
The cheese is handmade and freshness and hygienic processign is guaranteed. The assortment is rich; various spiced cream cheese and Brie and cheese rolls. Ostahusid also imports cheese from various countries and catering is an ever expanding part of its operation.
