Ilulissat (Jakobshavn), the centre of Disko Bay, is the third largest city in Greenland. There are more than 4,200 inhabitants living in the city and over 400 living in small villages in the region. The main tourist attraction in Jakobshavn is the Ilulissat Glacier, the most productive glacier in the Northern Hemisphere, with a production of 16 cubic kilometres of ice per year, moving at a speed of 22 metre per day.
Tourist Nature was founded by an Italian, Scivoli Silverio, in February, 1992. Tourist Nature has grown very fast and effectively since then, offering clients variable trips to the unspoiled wonders of Greenland both in the summer and in winter. The Arctic winter is long and cold, but during the spring it is often very sunny with no wind. Dog-sledge and snowmobile tours in the Arctic wilderness is what Tourist Nature offers its visitors during the period from October-April. But in the summertime, from May-September, Tourist Nature's specialities are sailing tours on boats, kayaks and dinghies in addition to trekking, fishing, hunting and cultural meetings.
On April 10, 1994 Tourist Nature attempted a record to get in the "Guinness Book of Records". The attempt was to make the longest dogsledge in the world. The dogsledge was 21.55 m in length and the handlebar 2.92 m in height. The weight was approx. 1,750 kg, and the passenger capacity was 103. It was pulled a distance of 110.9 m in 50 seconds by 260 dogs. To come and visit Ilulissat is more than a vacation; it is a cultural life experience. Traditions are still alive and strong, especially in the northern part of Greenland, where many Greenlandic people still fish and hunt to fulfil the needs of daily life.
