The Greenlandic telecommunications company, TELE Greenland A/S, is owned by the Greenlandic Home Rule Government. The company is responsible for all telecommunications in the country and provides a wide range of domestic and international services such as:

  • public switched telephone and telex
  • data networks
  • internet
  • ISDN, video conferencing
  • mobile communication
  • radio and television broadcast networks
  • aeronautical and coastal radio services
  • meteorological services
Greenland, with a surface area of 2,175,600 square kilometres, is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. It measures 2,760 kilometres from north to south and its population of 55,000 live in 16 towns and more than 70 settlements situated along the coasts. Nuuk, the capital city, has 13,000 inhabitants.
The telecommunications network covers the whole country. More than 80% of the customers are offered the services of a modern industrialized country, and even in the remotest settlement one at least has access to a telephone.

A 2,000-km digital radio relay system forms an essential part of Greenland's infrastructure. The repeater stations must withstand extreme weather conditions.

The network includes a 2,000 km digital radio relay system along the southwest coast and a satellite system covering the remote towns in the north and east. Spur or satellite links connect the settlements to the main system. Connection with the rest of the world consists of three satellite systems between Greenland and Denmark. The cost of this network has been high, but the benefits for the Greenlandic society have by far surpassed it.

TELE Greenland, founded in 1925, has its head office in Nuuk and it is represented by 20 local offices around the country. The total staff in Greenland number approximately 400. The engineering and installation department is situated in Copenhagen, with a staff of about 50. The total revenue of TELE Greenland in 1994 was DKK 485 mill. (approximately USD 87 mill.).
