Åbo Akademi University, located in Turku is the only Swedish language university in Finland. It offers both undergraduate and graduate courses and extensive research opportunities to some 5000 students. Two of the seven faculties are in Vasa by the Gulf of Bothnia, where there is a high density of Swedish-speaking people. In 1640 a Swedish count, Per Brahe, founded the Royal Academy close tothe cathedral of Turku on virtually the same site occupied by Åbo Academi University today. The new Åbo Academi University was founded in1918. This was maintained by the Foundation for Åbo Academy until it became a state university in 1981. Both in education and research Åbo Academi University has activeco-operation with the other universities in Turku and also with numerous universities abroad. The Turku Technology Centre offers a new model for collaboration for universities and companies. For Åbo Academi University it means premises for computing science and business management, share downership of apparatus and equipment and joint research projects, especially in the fields of biosciences, computer science, combustion chemistry and material research.

Arts, Mathematics and natural sciences, Economics and social sciences, Chemical engineering, Theology, Education, Social and caring sciences. Student and staff exchange is organized within the framework of the Nordplus (Nordic countries), Erasmus (Europe), Tempus (eastern Europe) and ISEP (USA) programmes and under bilateral agreements with other universities in Britain, Estonia, France, Germany, Russia, and USA. The departments of Credit Transfer Systems (ECTS). The university as whole is a member of the Santander Group, a European programme for universityco-operation. International University of Turku/Åbo is a consortium between Åbo Akademi University, University of Turku and Turku School of Economics and Business Administration. IUTÅ offers programmes for foreign students on special fields of expertise offered by the universities, e.g. Finnish Language and Culture, Finnish/Nordic Studies, Eastern European Studies, Law, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Molecular Biology and Bio Technology and Material Science. There are app.. 300 students from 25 different countries studying at Åbo Akademi University. |
