Airways Ltd.
FR-380 Sørvágur |
| Atlantic Airways was founded
in November 1987 and operates one aircraft, a BAc 146-200 which seats
85 passengers. It is the only company of its kind on the Faroe Islands. In March 1988 regular flights commenced from the capital, Tórshavn, to Copenhagen, Denmark's capital, and later Billund, on Jutland, was added to the flight schedule. Until 1986, the Danish airway company Danair operated on this route once a day and it took the locals 25-30 years to persuade the Danish authorities to give a license to a local airway company, which came through in 1976. It proved complicated to start the company due to lack of local experience in the business. Ten years passed after the license had been granted before an interested party among the Danish airway companies accepted a partnership. The associate, Cimber Air, provided the aircraft and training of the staff. The shares are currently owned by the Faroe Islands government, and the company controls 50% of themarket. |
