Volcano

The origins of the community of Grindavik can be traced back to Einar G. Einarsson, which set up shop there in 1897. During that time the town population was only around 360. Fishing has for centuries been a crucial element in the survival of Grindavik’s population. But fishing trips were often extremely dangerous. Men were frequently lost at sea and the catch wasn’t always stable. Today the tour operator “Volcano tours” has their office in Einar’s oldest shop house named “Flagghús” – “The flaghouse”

Íshestar

ÍSHESTAR’S SAGA

Íshestar Riding Tours was founded in 1982 by three families. One of the founders is Einar Bollason who recently retired.

In 1992 and again in 1998 the company opened up for others to become shareholders. Several Icelandic travel agencies invested in the company and the construction of the Íshestar Stables in Hafnarfjörður began.

During the first years of operation, Íshestar offered mainly riding tours of 1 to 2 hours from Miðdalur Farm at Laugarvatn, summer residence of the founders. In 1983 a ride along the highland trail Kjölur was operated for the first time, one year later the Golden Circle Tour was added. From 1990 new routes were added to the program and new farmers were made partners after operating as affiliates for a while. Today Íshestar offers riding holidays from all corners of the country and many of our partners have been with the company for more than 20 years.

Íshestar Stables in Hafnafjörður were opened in the year 2000 and enables Íshestar to operate a variety of day tours, training, and riding lessons both for experienced and for less experienced riders, all year long.

City Walk

History and Culture Walk

The famous two hour walking tour focuses on the history of Iceland, the evolution of Reykjavík as a town and Icelandic culture in general, laid out in an informative and comic way by either Marteinn (Martin), Eiríkur (Eric), Sara (Sarah), Jóhannes (Joe), Tómas (Tom) or Þórdís (Disa) english speaking Icelanders and history majors. This tour has no fixed price, instead it runs on the great Free Walking Tour model found allover the world where each participant sets the price of the tour afterwards instead of in advance. As a result, the guide relies solely on your contribution and works hard for his share in the donations. The „Free“ classic tour departs multiple times a day all year around. Occasionally on holidays we take a day off.

Iceland Rovers

A Legacy of Innovation, Passion & Professionalism
Over the last 20 years we have used our expert knowledge, passion for nature and pioneering spirit to create innovative activities in Iceland for travelers.

The 6th of January in 1996, the last day of Christmas in Iceland, was a fateful day for what will later become Iceland Rovers. At Sveinatunga Farm a chat between Villa, Bassi, Einar Torfi and Ingibjörg sparked the idea for the company. Later that month, Iceland Rovers was born and the idea was to focus on providing Incentive tours in comfy, modified Land Rover Defenders (also called Super Jeeps in Iceland). We were the first company in the travel industry to use modified Defenders. Because the concept was so new, we had to bring in an expert mechanic, Snorri, and an electrician, Ingimundur, to make proper adjustments to the cars.

January proved to be a month of growth for the company because Laufey, Árni, Sigrún and Niels joined the team, along with Snorri and Ingimundur. Defenders are quite costly to buy in Iceland, so the team approached B&L car dealership with a clever idea. For a discount on Defenders, they offered to help promote the concept of using a modified Defender as a vehicle for taking travelers on tours in Iceland. With 6 new Defenders and extra parts, the team got to work on making the modifications. As summer inched closer, Iceland Rovers gained sponsorship from companies like B&L, Bræðurnir Ormsson, Aukaraf and others in exchange for advertising. In June of 1996, the first modified Land Rover Defender was ready. Iceland Rovers became a registered travel agency that fall and Ingibjörg was the first official employee. The headquarters shared a space with Icelandic Mountain Guides, Bátafólkið and Langjökull. Iceland Rovers ran promotional trips throughout the fall in the new Defenders.

Adventurous, fun and safe tours were our aim, and we were successful in incorporating playful team exercises and challenges inside and outside of the Defenders.

Throughout the years, our most common tours were incentive trips to Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, and the mountains around Reykjavík.

We opened up new avendures for travelers, like lava cave tours, hunting for the Northern Lights & lobster tours, sleeping in snow houses, abseiling, snow gliding with style, become a viking for a day and team building games.

After more than a decade of collaborating with Icelandic Mountain Guides on different projects and operating in similar areas, the companies merged in 2007. During the last 10 years, Iceland Rovers has evolved from a Land Rover Defender (Super Jeep) company to an expert in comfort travel, no matter the vehicle. Super Jeeps are still a part of our legacy and we offer those types of tours, but our wider selection allows for us to meet the needs of travelers who seek to venture beyond the beaten path. Our goal is to MAKE EVERY MOMENT AN EXPERIENCE that will lasts a lifetime.

Iceland Rovers is also the sister-company of Icelandic Mountain Guides, an Iceland tour company that specializes in hiking tours, glacier tours, backpacking and trekking tours, ice climbing & mountain climbing.

The Iceland Rovers team is a highly select group of specialists. We pride ourselves for not only providing a fun, adventurous and diverse Iceland tour experience but also a safe one. You are in good hands with Iceland Rovers.

Safari

WHERE THE CITY ENDS, ADVENTURE BEGINS!

Safari Quads was established in 2003 making us the oldest ATV Quad tour company in Iceland.

Our operation had quite a humble beginning; we set our first roots on a farm in the countryside of West Iceland. Our tours were rugged back then – we like to think of them as ‘vintage’, but this was the birthplace of our passion and that is one thing that has not changed. We aim to provide our guests with an authentic experience with intimate exposure to the fascinating spectacle that is Iceland´s natural landscape.

We left the farmland behind in 2008 and returned to civilization in Reykjavík to set up our latest and greatest basecamp. We are now located under 15 minutes away from the heart of the city making our tours easily accessible to adventurous travellers. Reykjavík´s backyard has proven to be an alluring natural playground for our ATVs and buggies with pristine mountains and stunning lakes.

Safety & Comfort

In the very likely event that you´ve never rode an ATV or buggy before, we always have you covered. Our guides are highly professional, somewhat good-looking, well trained and occasionally funny. Our ATVs and buggies on the other hand are certainly good-looking, relatively new, well maintained, double seaters, fully automatic making them easy to handle. All of our guests receive extensive operational and safety instruction before each tour. Safety and quality are our top priorities!

Disclaimer

Lastly, we´d like to point out that our tours are ‘adventure’ tours and want to make sure that each guest understands the risk of a motorized activity. Everyone is required to sign a release form before departure stating that the driver or passenger is responsible for damages or personal injury he or she may cause during the tour and cannot hold Safari Quads responsible. We will provide you with the tools to have an amazing and safe experience with us. It is up to you to act in a responsible manner. 🙂

Our partners include Elding Whale Watching, Arctic Shots, Adrenaline Hunters and many more.
